TRAINING PAGE
HTA Training is a manners management and
horsemanship course all in one. I will help your
want to please us and be our friend. After all they
depend on us for their food.
Horses communicate through body language
and gestures. Yes, we do have to learn their
language but they also need to learn our body
language and gestures. It's the same for them as
they mean.
Q. Does High Trail Training break green horses?
A. No I saddle train green horses. There is a big
difference. To break a horse is to break their
spirit. Thats the old way of doing things. We want
our horse to keep their personalities and twinkle
in their eyes.
Q. How long does it take to train a horse?
A. Training is an on going process that never
ends. Does a football player ever stop training or
practicing? Thats right they don't. To answer the
question of how long do they need to train at
HTAT really depends on the horse and owner.
Typically the horse catches on to the manners
part pretty well in 30 days. Green horses typically
allow me on their back with in the first 30 days but
thats only the beginning for a green horse. I
guess it depends at what point the owner is
comfortable taking over. I normally ask for a green
horse a minimum of 60 days and 90 day
preferably.

Horses are typically afraid of everything.
You've probably seen training shows
featuring trainers like Cris Cox, Craig
Cameron, Clinton Anderson, or Dennis Reis
to name a few. They all use the release of
pressure to get results. Your horse needs to
like what they're doing, so you have to make it
fun when teaching your horse with the
release of pressure. Watch your horse and
reward the slightest try from them, and build
on that.
If your horse nips or bites you. You have 3
seconds to discipline them. After 3 seconds
they don't have a clue why your punishing
them.

to face up to different footing surfaces. Here is an example of the horse walking over a wood surface, which is scary and hollow sounding to the horse. Another good one is a plastic tarp. Ease into these type of tasks. Forcing them will just reinforce their fears.
|
This is a great exercise to practice with your horse. This task builds character and gives your horse confidence. The curtain also gives your horse exposure to that crinkling noise the tarp makes and reduces their fear of rain coats and other foreign objects you may encounter from time to time.

My training is specialized for each horse.
Tactics that work well on one horse may
not work on the next. I custom fit my training to
the horse I'm working with. Teaching good
manners to horses is rewarding to the horse
and will benefit their human counterparts.
Training horses is much more then just
getting a horse to do something on Que.
Here at HTA I teach your horse to think.
I let the horse decide when they will except
something new and different.
Force just doesn't work.
Horses don't mean to be rude and
misbehave, their actions are normal for horses.
communicate with them. Once we understand
one another, it becomes very easy for the horse
to learn. It's been my experience that most
horses want to please us. It's just a matter of
UNDERSTANDING, CONFIDENCE, RESPECT,
and of course, TRUST.
